Acabei de ler Notes from a Small Island, de Bill Bryson. O livro fala da experiência de um americano a viver em no Reino Unido e é hilariante! Revi-me em muitas passagens e ri, ri muito. O livro foi votado pelos ouvintes da BBC Radio4 como o livro que melhor representa Inglaterra. E eu concordo!

Nota-se o amor e carinho que Bill Bryson tem por este país, mas ao mesmo tempo ele faz críticas muito interessantes, sempre cheias de humor. Algumas passagens:

“There are certain idiosyncratic notion that you quietly come to accept when you live for a long time in Britain. One is that British summers used to be longer and sunnier.”

“There is almost nothing, apart perhaps from  a touching faith in the reliability of weather forecasts, that makes me feel more like an outsider in Britain than the nation’s attitude to animals. Did you know that the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was formed sixty years after the founding of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals? Did you knlow that in 1994 Britain voted for a European Union directive requiring statutory rest periods for transported animals, but against statutory rest periods for factory workers?“
